The Complete Home Shooting Range Equipment Guide

A shooting range is a welcome addition to your home, as it is a great way to entertain guests, hone your skills as a marksman, or simply celebrate the Second Amendment. It takes a lot of planning, however, and should not be a task taken lightly. Having a shooting range is a huge responsibility and comes with many risks. You have to think about equipment, safety, insurance, and maintenance on top of everything else.

This can seem like an awful lot to think about and could even deter you from getting started. The cost alone could be something too much for some. It helps to have some outside experience to lend a hand in this venture. No need to stress though, here is a handy guide to get you on your way to putting together your own home shooting range and how to make sure everyone stays safe while firing away.

Know the Purpose of Your Shooting Range

This is something you have to figure out before committing to building a shooting range at home. The last thing you want is to put together a shooting range only to regret building it.

Some questions you can begin answering yourself to figure out the purpose of your shooting range include:

  • Do you have a career in law enforcement or the military and want a private place to sharpen your skills?
  • Do you want a place to keep friends entertained?
  •  Is this going to be something you want to use for recreation in general, even privately?

All of these questions can help decide what direction to go in when designing your range.

Experienced Shooting Range Vendors Are Available

Ultimately a home shooting range is a great investment. It is a great way to privately practice self-defense, learn about firearms, and get yourself acquainted with the culture that comes with being a marksman. You can practice long distances if you like to hunt, close range if you are trying to get comfortable with pistols, or any other number of ways to utilize a shooting range for your own personal growth.

There are so many people to talk to about the joys of owning and operating a private shooting range, so do not hesitate to ask around and get to know some of the gun owners and range regulars in your community. Talking with a local range master is a great way to get some insight and learn a thing or two from a pro if you are new to the dos and do-nots of life on the range.

This seems like the obvious play but should be mentioned no matter how handy you think you are. There are tons of vendors worldwide that will offer their services to guide either you or a third-party general contractor to help build it. There is a lot that goes into installing an extension of your house specifically designed for live firearms. A vendor will be able to assist the contractor in terms of safety and suggesting the layout.

  • You should always go with a vendor, despite it costing more.
  • Cost should not be something you should be cutting corners around when it comes to building a shooting range.
  • It is so much more than simply shooting a target in your basement.
  • A vendor will help make judgment calls on whether or not your house can even support something like this or figure out where the best place to ventilate gunsmoke would be.

If you are inexperienced in building shooting ranges in your home, then it is all but decided that you should have someone helping you out with expert guidance. Leave it to the professionals and take the stress out of your life, trying to make every single decision yourself based on guessing. All it takes is one oversight for someone to possibly lose their life. It is not worth the risk of building a shooting range alone.

Plan for Your Shooting Range

Planning extends outside of literally planning how to build your shooting range. It is something you have to plan with the local municipality. This can certainly slow down your progress. However, this is non-negotiable. It is better to play ball with whatever codes and requirements they pin on you than to harm anyone else because you did not want to consult with your local officials.

  • Take a full inventory of structural integrity, gas lines, or anything else that might hinder adding a shooting range to your home.
  • Do not do anything without triple-checking your home’s blueprints.
  • Consult with local officials to help plan and adhere to codes and guidelines for your shooting range.

You would not mindlessly dig out a giant hole in your backyard to build a swimming pool, right? The same thing goes for building a shooting range. If your shooting range is going to be indoors, for example, it will likely be in a basement. What happens when you do not plan properly and accidentally shoot a gas line or some other calamitous scenario similar to that – you could have avoided it all by consulting someone.

It really helps to build a healthy relationship with these officials, as they make a lot of decisions in your area. It is wise to stay on their good side so you are not held liable for any false complaints or fined more money than you can count. The idea of having an unregistered shooting range in your home is not a great look in the eyes of the public; imagine how it could look in the eyes of a court.

Safety in Your Shooting Range

It goes without saying, but safety should be your absolute number one priority when it comes to building a shooting range at home. Safety comes in more forms than just having a first-aid kit and a phone nearby to call 911. You should be taking inventory of all sorts of equipment such as what kind of concrete is being used, ceiling measurements, soundproofing, protective eyewear, and other helpful gear.

  • Being proactive in this instance is going to pay dividends down the line.
  • Do not cut corners just to get the project done faster.

Concrete in Your Shooting Range

Concrete, is your biggest source of ballistic protection and should act as an immovable object to stop projectiles in their tracks. You should be checking for what type of concrete already exists in whatever surroundings you are building your range in and what type of concrete is about to be used to build the shooting range itself.

Did you know so many types of concrete existed? Hollow core or precast concrete is an absolute no-go and needs to be replaced immediately. These types of concrete are great for building sturdy foundations quickly and will more often than not be filled with foam or otherwise have other inconsistencies that make them ineffective around live-fire. It is paramount to locate these pieces of concrete and replace them.

You will want to find heavier, more solid types of concrete. They should be eight inches thick and specifically use 4,000 PSI concrete in their design. Filled CMU, tilt-up, or pour in place will be your best options. These will ensure the safety of anyone using your shooting range and will keep any bullets from damaging your foundation or possibly straying away from its intended path by splintering the concrete.

Safety Equipment for Your Shooting Range

You should never build a shooting range in your home without taking the time to budget money aside for special equipment designed for live-fire exercises. These pieces of equipment will not only protect your eyes and ears but also make the experience more enjoyable and stress-free so you can focus on bettering yourself as a marksman. There is a fountain of options available to make your home set up a safe and fun environment.

Eyewear is a must for any experience on the range. They protect your eyes from burning in the event of gunpowder blowing back into your face from discharging your weapon. The biggest benefit, however, comes from being shatterproof or otherwise impact resistant. This is a massive factor that comes in handy if debris is present or a spent bullet case hurdles towards your eyes while firing.

Do not go the cheap route with these, though. You should always stick with a trusted brand, and something the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rates highly. The ANSI runs rigorous tests on brands of protective eyewear and has very strict criteria for what makes the cut. Going with a cheaper product or regular eyewear like sunglasses will not protect you. Do your homework and pick up a pair that works.

The same can be said for hearing protection. There are lots of options when it comes to how you protect your ears, whether it be earplugs or over-the-head noise compressors. Shooting a gun is obviously extremely loud and will leave your ears ringing. Over time this will cause loss of hearing if the right protection is not being used. Do the smart thing and get ahead of it by using some combination of hearing protection.

Notable Equipment for Your Shooting Range

Now that all of the precautionary elements of your at-home shooting range are out of the way, it is time to explore some different amenities you can purchase to make the most out of your setup. There are a number of different pieces of equipment to purchase that will not only improve your quality of life but also make it a fun and relaxed place to enjoy yourself without having to turn it into a chore.

  • Target retrievers take time to set up, but they do exactly what the name suggests; retrieve your target. By attaching your target to the apparatus, it will move it along a linear track to and from the user with ease. Consider a wireless system with hidden target clamps to increase safety and reliability.
  • Bullet traps are a necessary part of any home gun range. Once the bullet is fired, it will enter the trap and cause it to lose its momentum to ensure that it does not damage anything and ends up somewhere that it cannot hurt anyone.
  • Shooting lane dividers are great in general, but even more so if you find yourself building a range with more than one lane. They protect each person from any mishaps by being placed between each lane with ballistic-resistant material.

Having any number of these pieces of equipment will make your firing range a safe and enjoyable place to be. It is always more fun when you do not have to worry about all of the things that could go wrong with a lesser setup. Having things like ballistic dividers, bullet traps, and target retrievers are ways to improve everybody’s target practice.

The Benefit of Target Retrievers

Having target retrievers keeps you from physically running back and forth down your shooting lane to set up and replace a target. Common target systems provide wireless capability and include preprograsmmed drills to make your experience fun and enjoyable.

Make sure that you select a range manufacturer that has a history of providing parts and services for your equipment. It’s essential that they are committed to their product and customers. Find a company that provides a warranty greater than 1 year. Bullet Traps Are a Must for Your Shooting Range

Bullet traps are specifically designed to stop the momentum and capture your bullets.

There are several types of bullet traps. However, for an indoor shooting range built at home, you will likely deal with either a steel deceleration trap or rubber berm trap. These traps are necessary to keep bullets from ricocheting all over the range, potentially hitting someone, or damaging your home.

A deceleration trap is essentially a metal chamber that captures fired bullets and relies on their kinetic force to move in a circular motion until they eventually slow down and fall into another container underneath that you can clean out over time. Once the gun is fired, the bullet travels into the trap and decelerates.

A rubber berm trap utilizes a steel structure that is built at a 30-degree angle and holds 2-3’ of chopped rubber. The bullet is fired into the rubber and decelerates in the rubber media. Over time the rubber berm would be cleaned out in order to remove the build-up of lead and copper jacket material.

Shooting Lane Dividers Add Protection

You have, without a doubt, seen a ballistic divider or shooting lane divider before, especially if you were a fan of any cop-dramas on TV. These are what separate the stalls in a shooting range, and they offer a spectrum of benefits. These heavy-duty ballistic steel plates or bulletproof glass panels keep you safe from other people in the firing line or anyone there that might be stopping by to say hello.

Accidents, unfortunately, do happen, and in the event of someone next to you having something go wrong with their firearm, it is important that anyone standing nearby is not injured inadvertently. Bulletproof glass protects you from accidental discharges and makes sure you can see everything going on clearly by being able to see through it at anyone around you. These come in different grades so consider what you need most.

Ballistic steel plates are the heavy-duty variant of this and can withstand just about anything that might take place within its confines.

Ventilation and Filtration in Your Shooting Range

Something you may not have considered yet is how much lead is going to be sitting around your shooting range. These particulates are extremely damaging to your lungs and body in general. The number of toxicities in the air from having a home shooting range is not a joke and should not be taken lightly. Luckily, you can set up a ventilation and filtration system to balance out these chemicals and keep your home safe.

The second you fire your weapon, you are contaminating the air in your shooting range. This is obviously not ideal, especially over an extended period of time. Without ventilation and filtration, there will be smoke build-up which will cause conditions to become hazy, and it will be tougher to breathe in there with all of the contaminants floating around. By installing proper ventilation for a shooting range, you will eliminate these threats.

The key to this is to create negative pressure within the range space, provide proper airflow and install HEPA filtration. The objective is to filter the bad air out and makes sure it does not go outside of the range. These ventilation systems are separate from the house ventilation, and they are naturally pretty expensive, but they are extremely important in ensuring everyone’s safety and health.

Maintaining Your Shooting Range

By now, you have probably started to recognize the need to maintain your shooting range. The best thing you can do for yourself and your firing range is to be proactive towards anything that could possibly go wrong. Work with your range manufacturer and ensure that you have the maintenance protocol understood. By regularly checking your equipment, the status of your ventilation, making sure nothing is broken before use, and cleaning out your bullet trap, your range will perform for a very long time.

Keeping your shooting range properly organized is very important as well.

  • By separating ammunition from firearms or keeping all of your safety equipment and medical equipment readily available, you will be well on your way to making sure no one has anything to worry about.
  • It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to stay ahead of anything that could possibly go wrong.

Your shooting range’s longevity hinges on the amount of upkeep you put into it. Caring for your shooting range regularly will result in a clean and healthy environment for everyone. Going the extra inch one day could go an extra mile the next. Never stop looking for ways to improve your shooting range. Maybe consider hiring someone to help you clean it every month or so, depending on how often you use it.

That being said, do not hesitate to bring in outside help if it becomes too overbearing for you. Good range manufacturers will provide aftermarket services to support warranty, maintenance, and even collect your metals when your traps have filled.

Insuring Your Shooting Range

And last but certainly not least, we have insurance for your shooting range. You will need insurance to make sure you are covered in the event of an accident, be it mechanical or physical.

Even if you wanted to try and run the risk of using your shooting range without insurance, chances are you would have had to file for it as part of an agreement with the local official you consulted to get whatever permits or approvals to build it in the first place. It is oftentimes a requirement by state law, but even if it is not, it is truly in your best interest to get it no matter how careful or responsible you think you are.

There are insurance agents out there who specialize in firearms and shooting ranges. Contact the NSSF (national shooting sports foundation) to obtain recommendations and references.

Are Gun Ranges Safe? Everything You Need to Know

Many people enjoy and participate in shooting sports. Any beginning shooter has many questions, and one of them should be, is this a safe sport?

More particularly, is it safe to go to a gun range?

Gun ranges are safe. Indoor ranges feature containment areas designed to absorb errant bullets rather than creating ricochets. Ceiling baffles deflect bullets away from the shooters. Bullet trap designs catch and retain bullets making retrieval of the copper and lead materials environmentally safe.

What Makes a Gun Range Safe?

Industry standards and building codes set the minimum requirements for a safe gun range installation.

Several elements make up the safety side of a gun range operation. The design and construction of the gun range are basic factors based on known standards learned over many years by the shooting industries.

Operational and maintenance standards are the responsibility of the gun range owner and operator. Often the insurance carrier works closely with the owner and manager of the gun range to develop policies and procedures that ensure safe gun range operations.

Knowing and understanding the rules for safe gun handling as well as abiding by the policies and rules set forth by the gun range management is part of safe gun range use.

What Goes into Gun Range Design?

Gun range designers base their designs on known industry standards, common engineering principles, and local building codes. The range equipment installed by range design companies engineer the equipment to meet rigorous standards then test the equipment well past those standards.

Professionally designed gun ranges protect shooters inside the range and anyone outside the range. Safety is the paramount goal of every gun range design.  Controlling bullets in the range is a priority for any safe gun range.  Designers utilize various methods such as concrete or cement-filled concrete block walls, bullet trap systems, and ceiling baffles.

Air handling and filtration systems protect the environment. Harmful or dangerous elements are quickly removed from the range and passed through special filters that remove the dangerous particulates before returning the air outside the range.

Are Older Gun Ranges Safe?

States require gun ranges to carry a minimum level of insurance. The insurance companies require gun range operators to keep their facilities compliant by performing routine inspections, maintenance, installing new equipment as needed, and documenting the maintenance of the facility.

Gun ranges are subject to inspections from several agencies, including OSHA. The local building inspection department issues occupancy licenses and routinely inspects the building for safe operational status. The health department usually oversees air quality issues, including the safe operation of the air handling and filtration systems.

The ongoing inspection process ensures that no matter the age of a gun range, it’s in the safest possible condition for anyone visiting. Gun range owners have a vested interest in maintaining their older facilities in top condition.

How Are Shooting Range Rules Enforced?

Range operators, working with their insurance provider, establish range safety rules. The shooting range provides its employees with training and certifies Range Safety Officers who comply with the NRA guidelines. These Range Safety Officers control the action at the firing line inside the range. The rules are in place to make the range a safe place to enjoy shooting.

Each shooting range will establish and make known its rules and regulations for shooters at their range. Each shooter is required to acknowledge and sign a document confirming they follow the range rules before shooting. In most cases, these rules and regulations follow industry standards and well-known shooting safety rules.  These are the shooting range rules most commonly followed.

  • Don’t load your gun until you’re at the firing line or firing station. When you aren’t at the firing line or when the range is cold, your gun should be in a safe condition with the magazine removed, the slide locked in the open position, or the cylinder open.
  • Follow the Range Safety Officers commands promptly.
  • Follow the range rules about maximum calibers and loads.
  • Remember the three basic rules of safe gun handling:
    • Always keep the muzzle of your weapon pointing down range
    • Never place your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to fire
    • Treat every gun as if it were loaded
  • Always wear your personal hearing and eye protection equipment when you’re on the range.
  • Stay aware. Don’t get so focused on your shooting that you fail to notice things that may be unsafe. If you see something that you believe is a safety problem, notify the range safety officer immediately.

These rules are all in place to protect you and make your shooting experience enjoyable and safe.

What Are the Shooters Responsibilities a Gun Range?

Shooters’ responsibilities are to know, understand, and follow the gun range rules and gun handling safety rules. Shooting safely and courteously is an essential part of gun range safety.

Gun ranges provide the safest facility and equipment available. The rules and regulations are in place to protect everyone.

What Does the Typical In-Home Gun Range Cost?

Surprisingly, in-home gun ranges are becoming more and more popular, and many people see it as a place to escape.

Many people now consider adding a gun range to their homes for the convenience of shooting at their leisure. Adding a gun range to your home may involve retrofitting an existing space or creating a new space. The overarching question is: how much does the typical gun range cost?

In-home gun ranges can cost $50,000-$200,000. The final total is determined largely by the simplicity or complexity of the equipment selected as well as the level of safety you want. To grasp the costs involved, you must understand the requirements involved in a home gun range.

Many factors affect the overall cost of installing a home gun range. These factors also involve decisions that affect the cost of those portions of the design and installation. Before you make any decisions about a home gun range installation, read on to learn the intricacies and requirements of such a project.

What Does an In-Home Range Cost?

The installation of an indoor home shooting range involves a variety of costs. You should expect to incur costs for permitting, engineering services, equipment acquisition, and remodeling or construction of adequate space. Additional costs can involve insurance and ongoing maintenance.

Engineering or Architectural Services

The permitting department may require engineering or architectural drawings to get the required permits for your indoor home shooting range. The cost of having these drawings produced can vary greatly, but in most cases falls between $1,200 and $6,000. Often the cost is based on the estimated cost of the project.

Permitting Fees and Inspection Fees

The permitting process almost always involves fees for both the permit and the follow-up inspections. These fees vary from approximately $125 to $1,000 plus in some cases and may involve permits and fees to different departments and even to different jurisdictions. Your local permitting officials can provide you with a schedule of permit and inspection fees.

Construction Costs

You may plan on retrofitting your indoor shooting range into an existing space or build a new structure to house the range. In either case, there will be costs associated with the construction and remodeling. A good contractor will provide you with an estimate for whatever type of installation you are planning. Remodeling costs may be as low as $100 per square foot or as much as $250 per square foot for new construction.

Ongoing Costs to Consider

Be sure to check with your insurance agent about adding insurance coverage for your indoor home shooting range. Some insurance companies will not insure a home with a gun range. In any case, there will be additional costs for the liability insurance and the coverage for the equipment.

You must also maintain the equipment. Air filtration systems need regularly scheduled maintenance to remain effective. Bullet traps require maintenance as well. The nature of target systems almost ensures regular repair to this equipment.  Maintenance costs could average $50 to $150 per month.

Is It Legal to Have an In-Home Gun Range?

Many cities and counties allow in-home gun ranges if you meet certain conditions. However, there are places where in-home gun ranges are prohibited or strictly controlled, and you must determine the legal issues where you live before you proceed.

Legal challenges can come in various disguises and from different agencies. For example, you may face legal issues from:

  • State agencies such as Health and Safety organizations that control and regulate air quality.
  • Local regulations and ordinances about discharging a firearm in a specific area, noise abatement issues, and zoning restrictions may prohibit any sort of shooting range in certain types of residential areas.
  • Homeowners Associations can exert a significant amount of control over what you can and cannot do on your property. Some covenants and deed restrictions may prohibit the installation of a home gun range on your property.

Before you begin building any indoor home gun range, be sure that you have the appropriate clearances and permits in hand.

Where Will You Put Your Home Gun Range?

Location is a huge factor in building a home gun range. Finding space large enough for a home gun range on most residential lots is a challenge. Retrofitting an existing space may be an option or building a new space if you have the room. Each alternative comes with its challenges.

If you have a large enough lot or acreage, building a new structure to house your home gun range is possible. However, the additional cost of the construction pushes the overall cost of a home gun range in the tens of thousands of dollars and perhaps more.

Renovating an existing space in your home might work if your home has a space suitable in size and location for the installation. Considering the overall size requirements for even a single lane shooting range, this is often impossible in most homes.

For many people, the best option is to retrofit an existing basement. Basements are excellent locations for in-home shooting ranges. The below-grade location provides safe zones without the cost of constructing elaborate concrete or block walls. Ceiling safety measures are not unreasonable in a basement installation.

What Features Do You Want in Your In-Home Shooting Range?

Much of the cost of installing an indoor home shooting range comes from the installed range equipment. Range equipment includes bullet traps, baffles, air handling and filtration, target systems, and auxiliary areas.

A home indoor shooting range in a basement with a simple bullet trap and air filtration system may cost ten to twenty-five thousand dollars to install. A space as little as twenty feet in length and four feet wide is adequate as a modest home gun range.

If you want to shoot larger calibers or rifles, the cost goes up. Larger calibers require more extensive protection from stray rounds and heavier bullet trap systems. Generally, you need at least twenty-five yards or seventy-five feet for a rifle caliber indoor home shooting range.

The sophistication of your target systems is also a cost factor. Simple target stands are relatively cheap, or you may fabricate target stands as needed. Automatic retrieval target systems can get quite expensive and require ongoing maintenance to keep them in top operating condition.

The Final Figures

You are required to install special air handling and filtration equipment and more elaborate stray bullet protection, the overall cost of an in-home shooting range can cost a hundred thousand dollars or more. Doing your homework before starting an in-home shooting range project is essential.

Are Indoor Shooting Ranges Profitable?

There are contributing factors to how much profit indoor shooting ranges will accumulate, and today, we’ll go over them.

By understanding what drives sales and revenue, you’ll have a better chance to make your indoor shooting range profitable.

An Indoor shooting range can be profitable. Shooting ranges are predicted to see an annual profit increase of 8.35%. However, there are elements that will determine the success of the shooting range.

Is an indoor shooting range worth the investment? This article will discuss how profitable indoor shooting ranges are and what can positively or negatively affect the profit margin.

Are Indoor Shooting Ranges Profitable?

As interest in gun usage and safety rises amongst consumers, the need for gun ranges will increase. This is an ingredient for higher profits. Some factors can make or break a commercial gun range, and these must be considered before starting an indoor gun range.

The major contributors to an indoor shooting range’s profit are:

  • Where the shooting range is located
  • Your customers
  • How it’s advertised
  • Its membership dues
  • The number of people who use the facility.

These contributing factors help determine how much overhead your business will make. Let’s explore how they can affect the profits of an indoor shooting range.

Membership Fees and General Customer Fees Make the Profit

On average, shooting ranges charge general customer fees of $10 to $14. This per-person charge can be hourly or by the day. How much you charge customers to use your indoor shooting range is where you’ll make your profits. You must be competitive when deciding on your prices to ensure your customers will return.

On the other hand, some ranges can charge upwards $25 for a VIP lane or target retriever equipment. These generally provide pre-programmed training scenarios, games, accuracy drills, special effect lights, and more.

Many businesses have a non-linear pricing structure. This means they charge different rates for certain customers during different times of the:

  • Day
  • Week
  • Month

To determine your pricing schedule, consider what time of day will have the greatest number of shooters and when you’ll be most likely to maximize revenues per hour. For example, if you’re charging less at peak times, you may make a larger profit for those hours due to having more customers.

With membership fees, you want to give your recurring customers the ease and ability to come whenever convenient. Memberships are typically a bit less expensive than paying per session. However, a paid member may bring new customers to the door.

To ensure customer satisfaction, we recommend that all ranges have an hourly or day-pass type of pricing structure available because this will allow people with different budgets to use the facility without breaking the bank.

The Location of the Indoor Shooting Range Affects the Profit

One of the most important aspects of having a profitable shooting range is the location. Your commercial firing range should be in a decent commercial neighborhood where people enjoy going.

The Indoor Shooting Range Customers Affects the Profit

The indoor shooting range needs to attract customers that have a need and a desire to be there. Indoor shooting ranges located in convenient urban areas will bring in higher profits as it attracts everyday citizens and those who protect and serve.

Therefore, you want to attract middle to upper-class people with an interest in or a need to practice firing a gun. These people may be:

  • Police Officers and other law enforcement need gun ranges to practice firing their guns.
  • Security guards often carry guns and may need extra training in using their weapons.
  • Gun-owning homeowners need a secure place to go to learn to shoot their guns safely.
  • Military personnel use indoor gun ranges to practice using their guns.
  • Gun sports enthusiasts will use an indoor range to practice, especially when they cannot make it out of town to an outdoor firing range.
  • Anyone new to gun ownership needs to familiarize themselves with the weapon and learn how to shoot it.
  • Anyone interested in shooting a gun can go to an indoor shooting range to fire a gun in a controlled environment.

The people that visit your shooting range will directly affect how much profit you make. If the area where you’re located does not attract those with money, then profits won’t be as high. To get more customers and higher profits, it’s important to understand your paying customer base.

Advertising Your Indoor Shooting Range Affects Profit

Advertising is a way to get more customers to your indoor shooting range and increase revenue. It’s important to understand how advertising works and how it will attract the customers you want to come into your commercial shooting range.

There are many forms of advertising you can use to promote your indoor shooting range. These include:

  • Print media such as Posters, flyers, and postcards, billboards, and banners. Give potential customers a visual direction to and hours opening of the gun range.
  • Coupons and promotions are also a great way to entice customers to visit your business.
  • Marketing campaigns. Marketing campaigns are a great way to reach people in different demographics like age groups and gender.
  • Word of Mouth. Happy customers will often suggest your business to their friends and colleges.

The frequency in which you advertise also plays an important role in how often a person is receptive to this type of advertisement.

Can a Shooting Range Advertise on Social Media

When it comes to social media, many ranges will post pictures of their clients shooting. They’ll also post lifestyle pictures of firearms without trying to sell.

Safety course ads are often denied because they will link directly to your shooting range and possible gun sales. That being said, Shooting Sports Retailer tells us it may be possible to advertise a safety course on social media.

They suggest making a new landing page for your safety course. This landing page cannot link, in any way, to your existing web page. They also suggest that you may want to buy an additional domain name to go with your safety course landing page.

Indoor Shooting Ranges Can Be Profitable

Indoor shooting ranges can be profitable. But they have several factors that affect the profit potential for an individual range. Location is key to success, while membership fees and general customer fees are also essential to make money from your indoor shooting range.

The number of customers you receive will also dictate how much you’re able to charge them. Advertising is important as well because it helps bring more people into the facility, which increases revenue generation possibilities. It all comes down to figuring out what works best for your situation by considering these various elements before jumping right in and opening up shop!

Maintaining a Modular Gun Range

Article Contributer – Diana Rotolo

In 2020, Action Target the expert in gun ranges partnered with CoverSix the expert in modular structures to launch Arcas modular ranges. Arcas modular ranges consist of three distinct platforms – the MBL (mobile gun range), EXT (3 lane extended modular gun range), and DLX (a 14-lane modular small arms range with an open bay void of pillars. This offering allows customers to purchase a rapidly-deployable gun range that requires minimal infrastructure anywhere in the world. Arcas modular gun ranges is outfitted with Action Target’s industry-leading range equipment so training and quality need not be impacted by the modular nature of Arcas.

Action Target is also the leading expert in maintaining gun ranges and offers customers a suite of services, support staff and programs to ensure their facility remains in peak operating condition. As with any range, modular being no exception, a great amount of effort and attention to detail must be paid to maintaining the range.

From scheduled maintenance and cleanings to managing metals recycling, hazardous waste disposal, and compliance documentation, Action Target’s programs and services can help you streamline your operations and simplify your procedures.

Why a Maintenance Schedule Is Essential for Modular Ranges

First and foremost, you must implement a service and maintenance schedule and stick to it meticulously. The health and longevity of your range depends upon it. With every Action Target range that is manufactured and installed comes an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Manual. Make sure you keep this manual accessible to your range staff, and if necessary, Action Target can send you a digital copy as well so that all the members of your team can have access to this manual. Establishing and maintaining a schedule is crucial to ensuring key maintenance and service is being performed regularly on your equipment. Not only does this ensure your range continues functioning as designed, but it is crucial to maintaining your equipment’s warranty.

Depending on the needs of your range, Action Target also offers service packages that can be tailored to your range Be it electrical, pneumatic, or physical, our technicians have the skills and knowledge to restore equipment operation, thoroughly inspect your range equipment for wear, and assess necessary service and maintenance protocols going forward. Any product that is in need of service can be taken care of on-site by our highly trained and knowledgeable team. Action Target also offers maintenance schedules and maintenance and service logs that will help you as you determine what works best for your equipment, training schedules, or range usage. Our team is able to check the performance history of many products through service logs. These logs provide insights that help us quickly identify solutions.

Keep Your Modular Range Clean

Just as important as maintenance and service is cleanliness. In order to keep those who step foot into your range healthy and safe, as well as remain in compliance with your local and federal agencies, you need to keep your range clean. There are several ways Action Target helps you succeed in this endeavor.

A big part of every maintenance plan for a shooting range is managing all the hazardous byproducts a range produces. These range byproducts include recyclable hazardous materials, such as collected lead, lead dust, brass, and non-recyclable waste such as used PPE and lead-contaminated filters. Any lead-contaminated range items that have a recyclable value are categorized as hazardous materials. All other lead-contaminated range items that have no recyclable value are designated hazardous waste. Ranges are required to properly handle, transport, and recycle or dispose of these byproducts according to EPA, RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act), DOT, and OSHA standards and regulations, with detailed documentation showing proof of this compliance.

Action Target helps manage this material for you through our Metals Recycling and Hazardous Waste disposal programs. We work with you to supply and customize a complimentary packaging system that best fits your range access, usage, and storage capabilities. We help set up a waste profile with federally approved hazardous waste landfills and manage the material as it transitions from pickup at your facility until its time of destruction at the landfill. As a range owner or operator, you are legally liable for this waste, from cradle to grave. With a partner like Action Target helping manage this process for you, you can rest easy knowing that it is being handled properly.

Stay on Top of Bullet Trap Maintenance

At the heart of your range, your bullet trap is one of your most important pieces of equipment. All bullet traps require service and maintenance throughout their life span. Steel and rubber are not impervious to wear and damage. Both bullet trap solutions have distinct maintenance needs, and Action Target is well-versed on what this protocol looks like based on usage of your range. These important pieces of equipment require daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly inspections, maintenance, and service. For a rubber berm trap this includes maintaining the depth of rubber, reapplying fire retardant and properly removing hazardous waste. For a steel trap this includes flipping plates, inspecting back shells and monitoring lead collection barrel levels. Routine maintenance avoids many costly repairs and ensures the bullet trap is working properly and more importantly – safely.

Action Target Can Help

Your target systems are another vital piece of your range, and though they are built to withstand abuse, these also require special care. Reference your action target owners and operations manuals for target system-specific maintenance requirements.

Many range operators simply do not have the manpower, expertise, or time to keep their equipment properly maintained. When lack of maintenance leads to equipment failure, critical operating time is lost. Whether your range is a training facility or a commercial operation, a partnership with Action Target will help you focus your time on the important business of running your range.

Action Target has online service techs available 24/7 that can help you troubleshoot via email, phone, or on remote meetings to help you determine the cause of your mechanical issues, order parts, and even walk you or your team through the process of fixing the equipment that is in need. Many of our products are remotely accessible, allowing our team to quickly troubleshoot and provide assistance.
Also, as software improves, we are able to provide upgrades without the cost of sending a technician to your range. By offering full access to service, this speeds up the maintenance process, ensuring minimum downtime.

Performing all of the required maintenance is key to keeping your equipment under warranty. A regularly scheduled maintenance plan with trained Action Target technicians is the optimal way to make sure this happens. At Action Target, we are confident we have created the best shooting range equipment. We back that up by offering a 3-year comprehensive coverage warranty, which covers both parts and labor due to manufacturing or product defects.

Action Target Can Help

We also offer various extended warranties to give you added peace of mind. Managing a modular small arms range is a multifaceted job, and our goal is to make your job easier. Action Target is committed to being a trusted partner at every level. Contact us to learn more about our full range of services and see what we can do for you.

Target Systems and Gun Range Types

Action Target™ designs and creates industry-leading, state-of-the-art gun ranges and target systems that provide unrivaled firearms training and proficiency. Whether you use your range for training, qualification, decision-making, or entertainment, your Action Target range provides an engaging, safe, and environmentally responsible shooting environment. A crucial component of any gun range is the target system employed on the range. Action Target offers a wide variety of target systems that allow you to optimize your range to your shooting discipline, simulate real shooting environments, and maximize the effectiveness of your range. These target systems seamlessly integrate into indoor gun ranges, outdoor gun ranges and modular small arms ranges.

Target Systems

  • Genesis™ and Pilot™ target retrievers offer dynamic target presentations that turn, tease, and spin targets to provide an unpredictable experience for the shooter. These systems are ideal for charging drills and custom scenarios that require life-like behavior and variable target distances. Common scenarios include law enforcement qualifications, firearm proficiency training, and commercial games.
  • SRET™ is Action Target’s longest-standing target retriever. The base model SRET is the most economical offering from Action Target and includes a toggle switch that sends a target out and back. An optional keypad interface provides a digital readout of target location and allow you to expand device capabilities to meet the needs of your range.
  • Dual Running Man Pro™ target systems move targets laterally along a track at variable speeds (walk, jog, run) to provide weapons training with moving targets. The DRM Pro solution is popular with law enforcement and military installations.
  • Turning Targets can rotate target positions by 90°, 180°, and 360°. Turning targets present shoot or no-shoot scenarios at or before cognitive reaction timing—ideal for qualification and decision-making training with law enforcement and military personnel. Indoor (ceiling-mounted) and outdoor (ground-mounted) installations are available with pneumatic and electric controls.
  • Autotargets™ are reactive targets that use hit-sensing technology to detect target strikes. With each strike, the Autotarget sends a digital signal to an app that tracks draw speed, split times, and strike location. Autotargets are available with zone-based targets that divide strikes into multiple scoring zones (center mass and outer-body) and E-type targets that offer single zone strike detection. Autotargets are modular and wireless, deploy anywhere, and sync together to form a mesh network.
  • Pneumatic Bobbers are reactive steel targets that challenge a shooter’s speed, accuracy, and judgement. Targets pop up from and retreat behind total cover, forcing shooters to concentrate on shot placement. Separate shoot no-shoot target plates require shooters to make split-second decisions on which target they want to shoot. Innovative training software controls presentation times and intervals.
  • Line of Fire™ shooting ranges incorporate multiple target systems in a single line of fire. Target systems include the Dual Running Man Pro, turning targets, swing-up targets, and pneumatic bobbers. This turnkey range solution is unparalleled when creating dynamic training environments. Line of Fire ranges are self-contained and frame-mounted, so you can expand your range with ease—all you need is flat ground and a suitable backstop or bullet trap. Line of Fire ranges do not require railroad ties, concrete, or other protective walls in front of the targets because they include an angled AR500 steel knee wall.

Range Types

  • Indoor Ranges are completely enclosed spaces that use safety baffles, bullet traps, shooting stalls, sound abatement, range lighting, air filtration, and ventilation to provide the safest possible shooting environment. Indoor ranges feature ceiling-mounted target retrievers, turning targets, floor-mounted Autotargets, and shooting stalls.
  • Outdoor Ranges typically have minimal infrastructure requirements, but support the installation of safety baffles, shooting stalls, bullet traps, and other protection solutions that reduce the risk of ricochet or injury—especially when in proximity of neighboring communities. Outdoor ranges feature ground-mounted turners, bobbers, DRM Pro retrievers, Line of Fire products, and Autotargets.
  • Modular Ranges are the ultimate in portable, self-contained, modular small arms ranges. Action Target and Cover Six partnered to create the Arcas™ DLX, MBL, and EXT, a series of modular gun range solutions you can place anywhere, with minimal site infrastructure required. These self-contained ranges feature ceiling-mounted target retrievers, DRM Pro target systems, turning targets, and ground-mounted Autotargets.
    • Arcas DLX – Is the new standard for modular small arms ranges, scaling to meet specific project requirements of up to 14 lanes and a 100M target distance. This deluxe configuration features an open-bay concept that does not require vertical supports mid-range and uses fewer modules than its competitors.
    • Arcas EXT – Deploys quickly and with minimal infrastructure, providing up to 3 lanes and a 100M target distance. Instead of the industry’s standard of reusing containers, the Arcas EXT utilizes purpose-built modules that combine seamlessly to create an unmatched finished product.
    • Arcas MBL – A mobile, chassis-mounted module built for the road. Fully portable, this range goes where it’s needed and includes all options and features found in any typical fixed-location small arms range.

What to Consider When Building a Home Shooting Range

Private home gun range with ballistic shooting stalls and target retriever

Few things offer as much joy and freedom as being able to shoot your firearms in your own private gun range. A home shooting range provides more than just a fun venue for shooting and a place to entertain your friends, it also provides you with training scenarios to hone your abilities as a shooter and develop the skills you need to protect and defend yourself, your family, and your home. If you’ve decided to build a private shooting range, there are many considerations to make sure you create a high-quality, engaging, and economical range that is reliable, easy to maintain, and safe.

Experience

Select an experienced shooting range vendor to work with your architect and general contractor. Shooting ranges are highly specialized, so your architect will certainly have questions regarding the design. Action Target™ designs, builds, and installs commercial and private gun ranges worldwide, and has the experience you need to build a quality home gun range. Action Target shooting range consultants are ready to assist with custom range designs and drawings for your home gun range. Reach out to the Action Target team early to help guide you through every phase of your project. (See past Projects here)

Planning

Consider how you present your plans to the city in which you are building your range. Some homeowners prefer to postpone installing a shooting range until after they occupy the home, often listing the space on the plans as cold storage, an archery range, or a panic room, and use the space accordingly until they are ready to build out the shooting range. However, in-home shooting ranges require careful planning during the design phase of the home to ensure proper dimensions, materials, penetrations, and space for the shooting range equipment. When planning a home range, meet with local zoning and planning departments early on to understand any codes with which you must comply.

Safety

When it comes to shooting ranges, safety is paramount. When designing a range, the materials used must provide complete safety for shooters. Walls should be solid concrete at least 8” thick (filled CMU, tilt-up, or poured in place), and use at least 4,000 PSI concrete. The ceiling should also use at least 4,000 PSI concrete, but you should avoid hollow core or other pre-cast concrete that contains voids or foam because it offers reduced ballistic protection. Solid concrete walls and ceilings provide the best solution to dampen noise and offer extra ballistic protection—crucial if your range is in a basement with occupied space above. The floor should use 5,000 PSI concrete (3,000 PSI min).

Purpose

What is the primary purpose of your home shooting range? Leisure, entertainment, 50BMG mag dumps? If you begin with a clear understanding about how you intend to use your range, Action Target range consultants can design a home shooting range to meet your needs and identify the right equipment and controls to operate it. By working with Action Target, you can ensure that you build a range that not only fits best with your budget but provides you with equipment that is tailored and built to last.

Design

Modern shooting ranges offer more than just concrete walls and paper targets. Today’s ranges are completely customizable to allow them to blend in homogenously with your home. Action Target range consultants help you make your product selection based on needs, performance, and aesthetics. Action Target offers standard and custom product designs that provide different functionalities and appearance for your home gun range. Combined with a variety of bullet trap options, ceiling baffle layouts, shooting stalls, and sound abatement solutions, your range will be custom-tailored to your needs and design specifications.

Product Offering

Action Target is the foremost provider of true turn-key solutions for any size gun range. From ballistic partitions, safety baffles, and acoustic treatments to target retrievers, bullet traps, lighting, ventilation, and even paper targets and range supplies, Action Target is the go-to for all home gun range needs. Why is this important for a homeowner considering installing a private gun range? Imagine needing service, or parts, only to discover that the vendor is no longer in business. Or worse, imagine you need to have several products serviced and you must coordinate with multiple manufacturers. Action Target simplifies the process of owning and maintaining a home gun range by being the expert for all equipment installed. Further, Action Target has a proven track record of maintaining range equipment—our longest-running target retriever has been in operation for over 15 years. When it comes to products, choose a company that offers everything you need for your home range, and who stands behind their products with long warranties.

Target Retrievers

Perhaps the most important choice you make in designing your private shooting range is the type of target retriever used. Action Target offers multiple retrievers to fit nearly any budget, but where possible, we recommend that customers use the Genesis retriever. The Genesis features pre-loaded games and training drills developed by leading firearms trainers to challenge every shooter. Whether you want to train or just simply be entertained, the Genesis can meet all your shooting needs. The addicting scenarios associated with a variety of dynamic targets provide you with an entertaining and unique shooting experience unlike any other.

Bullet Trap

For home gun ranges that do not expect a high volume of annual shots fired, a Rubber Berm Trap is often the best and most economic bullet trap solution. At low volumes, a Rubber Berm Trap requires little maintenance and lasts a very long time. Periodically the Rubber Berm requires mining to remove lead and maintain a safe environment, which service Action Target offers. Beyond that, regular maintenance to control rubber depth and fire retardant is required only periodically. The Vortex steel trap offers home gun range owners a high-volume option that simplifies lead collection. While the steel bullet trap has a higher up-front investment, it reduces lifetime maintenance costs by automatically collecting bullets in its deceleration chamber, eliminating the need for fire retardant application and preventing routine maintenance on rubber depth.

Ballistic Dividers

Ballistic dividers are extremely important when you have multiple lanes in your private gun range. These dividers can stop handgun and rifle rounds in the case of an accidental discharge. Action Target offers a full range of ballistic dividers, ranging from very economical to completely customized. A full line of accessories are available for ballistic dividers, including different table configurations for rifle and pistol, muzzle blast barriers, brass deflectors for shooter comfort, and rifle hangers for stowing unused firearms during sessions. Whether functionality, aesthetics, or budget is your goal, Action Target has you covered—literally.

Ventilation and Filtration

Another important safety factor in a home shooting range is the ventilation system. The shooting range ventilation system must be separate from the house system because it filters out harmful lead particulates and heavy metals. Ideally, your ventilation system should achieve a laminar negative air flow of 75 FPM, but not less than 50 FPM, and use an air filtration bank of HEPA filters. Action Target takes care of your ventilation needs, designing and installing systems guaranteed to meet all OSHA and EPA standards.

Life-Long Maintenance

Properly maintaining a home shooting range directly impacts its long-term operation. When properly maintained, you’ll enjoy a lifetime of hassle-free shooting in the comfort of your own home range. To ensure your equipment continues to function properly, Action Target provides a wide range of aftermarket services, programs, and products. Choosing Action Target for all your range products simplifies service and maintenance. Action Target customer service representatives are cross-trained to provide support for all products while on service visits or when providing over-the-phone support.

Warranty

We stand behind our customers and our products. To demonstrate our commitment to your success and satisfaction, and our confidence in Action Target products, we provide a Trusted Partner 3-year comprehensive coverage warranty that is 3x the industry standard.

Home shooting ranges are quickly taking the place as the entertainment option in custom homes. Action Target is dedicated to providing you a safe, comfortable, and fun shooting range where friends and family can compete and practice their skills as shooters.

ACTION TARGET AND COVERSIX SHELTERS ANNOUNCE

MODULAR SHOOTING RANGE TEAMING AGREEMENT

PROVO, Utah  March 18, 2020  Action Target Inc., the leading manufacturer of modern shooting ranges, steel targets, shooting supplies and aftermarket services, announces a new teaming agreement with CoverSix Shelters. CoverSix has a proven track record of providing customizable and scalable modular structures to defense, military, and training groups around the world. The two companies are committed to working together to provide customers with world-class modular shooting range systems and turnkey solutions.

These modular shooting ranges will provide a completely tactical training experience. They are modular and scalable from 1 to 14 lanes wide and 10m to 100m in length, and they have no columns or support structure midrange. Rather than using standard ISO shipping containers as the building block, these modular ranges are purposefully designed and built using the proven methods of construction introduced by CoverSix in the USA and internationally.

“We are consistently looking for ways to provide the best solutions for our customers. We are excited about our partnership with CoverSix. They not only share our core values but have the professional experience and expertise in the defense industry to execute projects of this magnitude. This partnership is a true win for our customers that need modular shooting range systems,” said Mike Birch, Action Target CEO.

These built-to-order facilities can be delivered to sites across the world and require minimal site preparation. Each unit can be outfitted with Action Target’s technologically advanced products, including baffles, bullet traps, ballistic partitions, ventilation systems and target systems for advanced training—including the Genesis Target Retriever System, Dual Running Man Pro, and the hit-sensing AutoTargets. In addition, the SmartRange Axis control platform enables ranges to easily operate and manage their range equipment from one central control screen.

With our 20 years of modular construction experience and the ability to provide customizations to the size, height, interior and exterior finishes, plus the latest in range technology from Action Target, we’re hoping to not only disrupt the modular range market, but revolutionize it as well,” said Darren Hillman, President of RedGuard, the parent company of CoverSix.
